Two girls hoping for a championship time in swimming. Will there dream come true? By Isabella K
Do you have a dream that you have been working so hard to achieve? Your chance is right around the corner but you need to work extra hard. Two girls from different teams, different coach expectation and mismatched technique are both going for a championship time in 50 free and 200 breast . On December 14 there’s a swim meet called JP fiset at the kinsmen centre pool in Edmonton. Teams from all over Alberta will be attending! Two girls from Calgary Isabella from U of C Dinos and Lauren from Killarney swim club are going for a championship time in 50 free and 200 breast. These specific swims that they are focusing on are so important because getting a champ time can qualify them to go to another important meet. What is your goal? Isabella is wanting to get a championship time in 50 free. The champ time is 30.5 and right now Isabella goes a 32.81 so she needs to take off about two seconds. Lauren wants a championship time in 200 breast and she goes a 3.27 and the champ time is 3.12 so she needs to take off about 15 seconds. Getting prepared is a very big issue when swim meets occur. What do you do? Lauren says she works extra hard in practice and she goes into the harder and faster lanes in training. Isabella says she goes into the same lanes and thinks of what she’s swimming in practice like a race and works up to being first in the lane. Are you exited? Yes I’m so so excited because my team is offering team travel says Lauren, and I am sharing a room with my friends. Isabella is also very exited because her mom and her are going to be sharing a room with her friend Sydney and her mom. Are you nervous? Isabella says that she is very very nervous because she is a sprinter and her coach put her in a long distance swim. Lauren is also very nervous because of how fast other kids are going. Both of them are also worried that they have been putting all this work in and will not accomplish. Now Isabella and Lauren are looking forward to the swim meet and are always thinking positive. Are you tired of people ignoring you when they are on cellphones? Connect Charter School, in Calgary AB is having issues with cellphone usage among all grades 4-9. Lately, the students are seeing people on their cellphones during recess times and even when there is a mandatory recess. The school has not made any rules for cellphones used and bought to the school. The school is known for its camps and field trips and the technology that is given to the students. People on phones use it for games, social media, texting, calling, movies, YouTube, etc. The more people spend time with their cellphones, the more they get less socially involved with people. They can lose concentration in classes and school work. It can be dangerous because they can get cyber bullied and other people can access and get information of their accounts. Avery Barber from 6.2 says that normally she just uses her phone for calling and texting her parents. She sees people using their cellphones inside and outside of the school during recess. She says ”I think that the school should make a rule to ban using the phones during recess times”. Alex from 6.2 says that she uses her cellphone to post pictures. She says that she makes her account private”. She thinks there should be a rule to be cellphones to be in peoples backpacks during the whole day. “I heard there are people who connect to the school Wi-Fi so the teachers should type the password for the students I-Pads” said Alex. Sometimes phones can be used for learning and useful purposes like Khan Academy, math games, tools, news, etc. Other schools have rules for phones used but this school is having issues and don’t even notice that. The school should make rules soon or else the issue will become a hazard. Do you like food, cooperation, more food and creativity? Well the food Bank has a new idea in Calgary known as Canstruction it all started in the United States 501 nonprofit organization providing canned food to local food banks in cities holding Canstruction competitions. Adam Adamson gave interviews to teachers at connect charter schools who is now doing it. 7.4 teacher Ms. Pereverzoff said, “I think its a fabulous idea my family group needs more time.” 6.4 teacher Mr. Dittmann said “I think it’s a creative way to collect donations for the food Bank.” Each family group has to build something different from the rest. 9.3 teacher Ms. Nelsons family group decided to create sushi, Mr Fawcett decided to create a cake. Both of these thoughts have something in common, there is a topic each year and the topic is to make a can of foods to make, well food. All of the food will go to the food Bank. It’s just like your regular average grocery store, people who can’t afford food from any other stores, they go there with their bags, find out what they need and go to the register, they check it out and you get it for free. Have you ever wondered what normal cheerleaders do at a cheer competition well I have the answer? These kids have been practicing their hearts out and will still practice their hearts out for the biggest competition in their season. This competition is a very big competition for this cheerleading team because teams from all across Canada and America are competing for 1st place. This competition will take place Feb 16 - 18, 2018. This competition is made possible by the committee that plans this competition every year. It’s time for these kids to get into the gym and practice. Preparation for this competition begins with cardio which means sit-ups push-ups squats and much more. Than the kids go into stunting which means hitting there stunts in the routine and going back to the basics of stunting. Now it’s time for tumbling which means practicing there tumbling in the routine. Finally we have gotten to practicing there whole routine with there custom made music, sometimes the coaches like to play games by giving the best stunt group candy or giving them money that they can cash in for candy. Jodi said quote “from her experience at this competition she told me that these kids love to compete at this competition the most out of every competition that they compete in. By far they have the most competition to compete against and these teams are usually the better cheerleading teams in the there division which makes it a lot funner”. Jodi said quote “this is there biggest competition of the season because it puts the kids to there limits because of the pressure they have on there shoulders wanting to win. Have you ever wondered if your child will find friendship and athleticism in one sport? The Cal west minor basketball association (CMBA) in Calgary, Alberta has 4 divisions depending on your age they go in this order Mini, Bantam, Midget and Juvenile. There are 12 teams in each division from team 1-12. There are many kids playing for the Cal west teams, there is also a girls division. The events have already started and the games are up and running! All teams have been through 6 seating round games, 5-7 practices and at least 4 games. At the end of the season the playoffs start, there are 6 games in the playoffs. When the playoffs end there is a tournament that Basketball teams from all over Calgary and beyond, compete to get a trophy. The reason so many adults and parents use there time to come out and teach kids Basketball is because they want kids to know the fundamentals of basketball. Team 6 Power forward Aiden McAllister said “I think that Bantam will provide a great challenge along with learning new skills, one of the most important things I’ve learned is screening the ball and screening away from the ball.” Ben Chai stated that “The basketball nets are higher and there are bigger and older people on each team.” One of the greatest things about this basketball organization is how the referees are so fair and nice to the players and coaches. For example I was at one of the games and one of the referees kept commenting one how the players are doing. I even heard one give advice to a player with his shot. “Because the courts are bigger you have to run more and you will get exhausted quicker.” Explained Ben Chai who plays for team 8 Bantam. The great experiences your child will take away from this event will be helpful for a great chunk of there life. Such as Friendships, fundamentals, skills, respect, good sports, smarts, working as a team, athleticism, and last but definitely not least Basketball skills. Local Lakeview school Connect Charter has their grade six students in the middle of a language arts unit that is challenging their writing skills. Students have been asked to write an article on something in their school or personal life. Their teacher Mr Fawcett scheduled for MRU writing students and Metro reporter Helen pike to come in and talk to the kids. “Writing an article is getting information from sources (people).” says Helen Pike. Some of the advice students took away from Monday the 13th MRU students visit and Tuesday the 14th Helen Pike visit. I think it was a very important experience to learn from the professionals and the people who do it as a career. “It was a great thing for Mr Fawcett to do to bring in the professionals we learned a lot says one of his students” says Fraser from 6.2. To create an article you need a focus statement or something that the people want to read about. Something that intrigues the reader. To start an article you need a lede. You also need an idea that is interesting. “Something happening or has happened.” says Helen Pike. To help the students with their articles, she advised that the students create an article based on there school or personal life. The grade six’s took away a lot of information from each visit and are beginning to start there article’s.
