Connect cross country kids run to win and represent connect charter school By Tristan
Have you ever been stuck in a storm or it raining so hard you can’t see the ground? Every morning at 7:45 cross country runners from all grades meet to practice in the freezing cold weather no matter what. Everyone who signs up for this thrilling activity is ready to wake up early and run in any weather. Runners practice long distance running and sprints, getting ready for the competitions. In the fall after school connect charter runners meet at 4:00 to compete in the wild races. competitions are held at charter schools that volunteer to host the meets. The race distance varies in your age from grade 4-5 one kilometre 6-7 one and a half kilometres and grade 8-9 two kilometres. After grade three, four and five run it’s grade sixes turn to run. Connect charter runners line up at the start intimidated, fallowed by other charter runners. Finally they fire the gun and the rapid races begin. Shirley Fleming who has been racing for 30 years said that “the start of a race is a relief because all of the hard training is done and you just have to focus on the race and do your best”. You can win a colourful and detailed ribbon if you get top ten in the race. Connect runners all look forward for the championships meet because the top three finishers leave with a special medal. Connect runners say a special thanks to their dedicated parents, every meet their mom or dad needs to drive them to the meet and get them organized and fed. Even through the rain or snow parents are cheering and yelling. The coaches are there to assist the runners and direct them Jake Bridges who is on Connect's cross country team said that him and others are fortunate to have such supportive parents.
