The finishing touches are still being put on our third session of EXPO in Grade 6, but we thought we would take a moment to let families know what we have planned for next week, and the week afterwards. Our goal is to pack as much experiential learning opportunities we can into our designated EXPO weeks, but there was just so much good stuff this time around that some of it has spilled over to the week of November 20th. Here is a run-down of what is on the slate for the next couple of exciting weeks:
Monday, November 13
A group of Mount Royal University Journalism students will be joining us at school to help us learn what it takes to produce quality news articles. Writing interesting and effective news articles is not an easy task, but our expert helpers will be able to support us in determining what types of stories are newsworthy as well as teach us how to prepare, conduct and communicate an interview. MRU students along with their professor will be working with 6.1 and 6.2 students during the morning on this day.
Tuesday, November 14
Plans in in progress to have Helen Pike, a reporter from Metro News come to our class to help support our learning with article writing. In addition to working on our article writing unit, students will also be conducting investigative science work ahead of our visit to the Police Interpretive Centre on Thursday.
Wednesday, November 15
Our goal was to have our PE swimming field trip on this day, but due to various factors beyond our control that day has been moved to Tuesday, November 21. As much as we aim to have our EXPO opportunities line up during our designated EXPO weeks, there are times when an EXPO-related activity is scheduled outside of our particular week. Students will be at school working on preparations for the Police Interpretive Centre field trip as well as putting finishing touches on their news articles.
* Important Note: Fun Lunches will be delivered on Friday, November 17 - please make sure your child has a packed lunch on Wednesday. If you have any questions about this, please send us an email.
Thursday, November 16
Police Interpretive Centre Trip - thank you to everyone who has already signed and returned their child's consent form to us. The 6.1 class has the necessary three parent chaperones, but 6.2 is still in need of two parents to join us on our trip. If you are free and willing to assist on this day, please let Mr. Fawcett know asap.
Tuesday, November 21
Our PE department is sponsoring an all-day swimming extravaganza on this day. Students will enjoy many fun and exciting water-based activities. A consent form for this trip shall be sent home shortly.
So, as you can see, students in 6.1 and 6.2 have a lot of fun and exciting learning experiences lined up for the next little while. Please take note of these dates and let us know if you have any questions about the program that we have put together for the upcoming EXPO Week.
Wednesday, November 22
To support our Science unit, the Science teachers have enlisted the expertise of a Police detective to come in and work with our students to help them make the most of this part of the Science curriculum.
